Nature-Friendly Farming Week 2025

Back to Blogs

As the UK endures its driest spring since the 1950s, Nature-Friendly Farming Week (19–25 May 2025) arrives at a pivotal moment for British agriculture. Organised by the Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN), this week-long initiative highlights the essential role of sustainable farming practices in building resilience against climate extremes and ensuring the future of food production.

The Importance of Nature-Friendly Farming

This year's theme emphasises that farming's benefits extend beyond food production. Nature-friendly practices contribute to strengthening rural communities, protecting water supplies, storing carbon, and supporting biodiversity. These approaches are increasingly vital as farmers face challenges like water shortages, crop stress, and escalating wildfire risks.

Martin Lines, CEO of NFFN, stated:

“Every day without rain pushes crop yields backwards. Water for irrigation is already running low, and farmers are having to make hard decisions about which crops, if any, can be saved.”

He further warned that without immediate support, some farmers might leave fields empty this autumn, leading to reduced food production and fewer jobs in rural areas.

Showcasing Resilience Through Sustainable Practices

Farmers across the UK are demonstrating how nature-friendly methods can enhance resilience. Tom Edmondson, who operates a mixed farm near Milton Keynes, shared:

“Our nature-friendly farming approach – using cover crops, careful grazing, minimal soil disturbance, and years of building organic matter – has made a huge difference. While others around us are really struggling with the dry spring and failing crops, ours are still holding up well.”

Such practices not only support the environment but also offer economic benefits by improving soil health and reducing dependency on external inputs.

Engaging the Community and Policy Makers

Nature-Friendly Farming Week also serves as a platform to engage the broader community and influence policy. The RSPB's petition urging the UK Government to protect and grow the nature-friendly farming budget has garnered over 100,000 signatures, reflecting widespread public support.

Participants are encouraged to share their sustainable farming practices on social media using the hashtag #NFFWeek2025. This collective effort aims to showcase the positive impact of nature-friendly farming and advocate for policies that support these essential practices.

Nature-Friendly Farming Week 2025 underscores the critical role of sustainable agriculture in addressing climate challenges and securing the future of food production. By adopting and supporting nature-friendly practices, farmers, communities, and policymakers can work together to build a resilient and environmentally sustainable agricultural sector.
